I know you’re wondering why I would write about something as
simple as taping a box, but believe me, it makes a huge difference when your
moving things around. I’ll tell you my
story so you can relate to what I’m saying.
My husband and I have moved too many times to count. I always helped tape up the boxes while we
were packing. I was never educated on
the proper way to tape, I just put the two flaps together and tapped up the
seam on each side. My boxes would notoriously
come untapped either the top or bottom and sometimes both. It wasn’t until a recent move that my husband
watched me tapping and corrected my technique.
Since then, my boxes always stay together and humidity and age of the
box are not an issue.
Here are the proper steps to tape a box:
1.
Square the box up folding over the short flaps followed
by the long flaps
2.
Tape half way up the side of the box then across
the flaps closing up the seam and then up the other side of the box
3.
Flip the box over and fill. Filling the box with solid material all the
way to the top helps support the box when stacked or moved in storage.
4.
Fold the short flaps in first followed by the
long flaps
5.
Tape over top of the first tape on the side of
the box bringing it across the flaps to seal the seam then down the other side
being sure to tape over the previous tape.
Connecting the tape on both sides ensures a good quality seal and adds longevity
to your box. Not taking these steps will
perpetuate the box falling apart during moving.
It may sound like lots of additional tape but you will
appreciate these extra steps when moving.
Hope this post saves you time and trouble down the road!
